Meet New Committee Members

This autumn saw Australia Society Tokyo getting busier again with lots of events.  The Committee wanted more volunteers to enter the busy season, and fortunately three ladies joined us in September!  The newsletter editor has met them once and apparently they are interesting, amazing and so willing to help out with the committee.  Let’s try to learn more about them!

My husband and I returned to Tokyo a year ago with our three children.  This is our third time to Japan, having lived in Yokohama for 2 years and Tokyo for almost a year.  We have also lived in Seoul and Singapore with our hometown, Sydney, thrown in between!

Having been away from home for 10 years on and off, I have come to love the Australian Society events in these countries, there have been lots of laughs, wines, great Aussie food and plenty of memories.  With three small children and an events background in my previous life, I thought I could help in some way with the Family functions and why I am joining the Committee this year.

We love living in Tokyo and hope to be here for many years to come, so I hope to continue to make the Family events as successful as they have been in the past (and look forward to seeing you all there!).

Arriving from Melbourne with my partner Richard earlier this year, this is our first expat tour and we have had an amazing first six months. There have been many frustrations and quite a few challenges, but there is so much about life in Tokyo we have fallen for. I spent the first few months doing my Forest Gump impression walking for hours a day exploring, getting lost and discovering where all the best gyozas and plate shops are in Tokyo. And yes, food does taste better if it’s on a nice new plate!

Exploring the city on foot and bicycle I soon realized how compact it is and how easy it is to get around. Now we love getting out and about, discovering new places to eat, using our very basic Japanese and people watching. I love the seasonality here and the produce and the fact that everyone is obsessed with food. I have made some great friends and had many “only in Japan” moments. I look forward to getting more involved with the Society – particularly in organizing more foodie events so if you have any suggestions let me know.
