President's Farewell Message By Michael Marlay

After two years as Australia Society Tokyo President, and about six on the Committee, this is my last contribution to the Society’s Newsletter (at least for the next year or so). While I am not one of those relocating from Tokyo at this stage, work is taking up more and more time and as a result I do not feel that I am able to contribute to the Society to the level that it deserves. Sadly I am not the only one in this situation, as the past year has been a challenge for many fellow volunteers on the Society’s Committee. I know many have wanted to do more and continue to make the Society a fun, Australian inspired, social outlet for the international community in Tokyo. However a number of Committee members have been reassigned and several are under increased work pressure also. As such if you are interested in being a part of the Society’s Committee and volunteering a little of your time please let us know.

With the AGM now postponed to a date to be determined, the next focus is on the Family BBQ that Sophie and Bindi are hosting in the Australian Embassy Gardens on May 16th. Members and friends can register now, with more information available on the Society’s web site. This is always one of my favorite events of the year and a great opportunity to escape the concrete than is too prevalent in Tokyo and enjoy an Aussie inspired BBQ on the grass at the Embassy. It will certainly be a memorable event for me to call my last, before handing over to the President elect at the AGM.

I would like to thank all members for their support at our events, all of our sponsors for helping us donate around Y10 million to charities over the past two years, and last but not least all those who have served on the Committee with me. It has been a great challenges and a great deal of fun. Hopefully I will have the opportunity to sever again in the future once life allows a little more time in the day.

Cheers,

Michael Marlay
