President's Message

by Trevor Reynolds

Greetings!

I am Trevor Reynolds, your new president for this year. Thanks to all the members who attended the May AGM and voted for me to head up the organization for 2010-11.  I will do my best to continue the success AST has achieved over the years!

We had initially thought there was going to be a tough time getting the committee together this year as many committee members chose to step down. However, at the AGM we had a good turn out and over 30 attended and we now have a full committee.

I must give thanks to our outgoing President Michael Marley who has steered the committee over the last 2 years. I must also thank all the outgoing committee members; David Taylor, Tracey Northcott, Jodie Riley, Kuniko Noguchi and Kiren Richardson, whose time and efforts are greatly appreciated. I look forward to welcoming you to upcoming events and for you to enjoy them without having to work! (Well maybe a bit).  Also a big thanks to all of our sponsors from 2009-10.

For those of you who I do not yet know, a wee bit about me. I am Canadian with an indefinitely renewable Australian visa and have established a home in Noosa, so I hope to do my best as a quasi Aussie! I also am a director of Banner Japan, Banner Asset Management Japan and Ebisu Finance Partners Pty. in Australia.   I have a lovely wife Alison (who perhaps more of you know) she is active in the school with our children Ella and Avana. We have lived in Japan on and off since 1990.  We also look forward to living permanently in Australia soon, not that we don’t like Japan but there is a vast pull to Australia for us.

Together with the new committee, there are a load of events we want to organize this year. Many will be smaller in nature and we hope you will come to these events and have some fun as the AST is all about Australians, their families and friends having fun together in this challenging city.

One of the biggest challenges the committee has is finding a greater variety of events. Going forward we would like to have more events that appeal to every aspect of the society. The committee is very open to other events – your suggestions and help are very welcome. If you have any special interests or skills you could share with members and would like to organize an event, please let me know president@australiasocietytokyo.com

At the last kids BBQ event we had 252 people attend and we gave each member/ family a questionnaire on events and asked for suggestions on other events that AST could put on, only 20 came back. Of those we have tried to come up with a schedule based on the feedback of that survey for possible events over the year. These are:

1.               June 25th Wine Tasting Stellato (headed by the only Master of Wine in Japan) - cost only 5,000!

2.               Tokyo Bay Boat Trip July

3.               Golf trip - July / August - we have 16 slots.   (Course TBD)

4.               Beer Garden July / Aug

5.               CASUAL -- Adult BBQ Sept.  (Date TBD at Embassy)

6.               AFL Grand Final Saturday 25th September Kick-off in Melbourne is at 2.30pm (venue TBD)

7.               NRL Grand Final Sunday 3 October Kick-off in Sydney - Time TBA (venue TBD)

8.               Melbourne Cup Nov 2nd   - (venue TBD)

9.               Bledisloe Cup Sat Nov. 9th   - (venue TBD)

10.           Kids Christmas party Sat Dec 4th Embassy

11.           Aussie Ball. Jan 2011

Apart from the Melbourne cup and the Aussie Ball these are NOT set in stone; all these events need coordinators and on the day organizers, these volunteers are usually committee members and their families, help is always welcome!

I would like everyone to know that AST, as it stands, is not in demise; it is a small but healthy organization that caters to the members at large who use the society. The most successful events have always been the children’s functions; they are usually sold out in 2 weeks.  The Adult functions tend to have more difficulty; I am sure this has to do with the heavy demands family, work and Tokyo places upon all of us. The next event is the Wine challenge on the 25th of June.  It will be lead by Ned Goodwin (who is Australian) and who is the only Master of Wine in Japan – so along with the tasting we will get a bit of wine knowledge!

Finally, the Australian Society of Tokyo will remain The Australian Society of Tokyo as we are not holding NZ day events or any other country events for that matter.  Everything that has been said recently has been taken in and we will try to make things better going forward.  Your suggestions are very welcome. Please let me know president@australiasocietytokyo.com

We look forward to everyone joining in to make AST and Tokyo life just a little bit better.

Regards,
Trevor Reynolds
