The Tokyo International Literary Festival 2016 will be held in March and the Japanese version of one of Australia’s best-sellers, “The Secret River”, will be launched on March 4th at a special event supported by the Australia-Japan Foundation. Kate Grenville, the author, will be guest speaker at this event.

‘The Secret River’ has been nominated for the Man Booker Prize (2006) and has won many awards including the Commonwealth Writers Prize (2006). It is one of Australia’s best-sellers introducing a family arriving in Australia in the early 19th Century and their encounter with the Aboriginal people.

Author Kate Grenville will be a guest speaker at the book launch event along with Ms Yukiko Konosu, a well-known translator of foreign literature. Ms Tomoko Ichitani, translator of the book, will moderate their discussion.

The Australia and New Zealand Chamber of Commerce in Japan, in conjunction with the Australian Embassy and Club Australia, is organising a trip to Minami-sanriku on May 28-29. The main event will be an Australian BBQ on Sunday as part of the annual Friendship Festival. This is an opportunity to continue the strong cultural exchanges between Australia and Minami-sanriku and support the local community. Other activities will include a visit to the tsunami affected areas and the Australia Friendship Learning Centre and library in Minami-sanriku, affectionately known as Koala House, and meeting with survivors and local fishermen. Funded by the ANZ Bank, Koala House was the first civic building that was rebuilt in Minami-sanriku after the tsunami. AST members are very welcome to join this trip and see for themselves the wonderful things that the Australian and New Zealand community in Japan is doing in this region. For more details about this trip, please contact the ANZCCJ Secretariat at info@anzccj.jp

SAVE THE DATE! Our next big event at the AST is our Spring Adult's Evening Picnic at the Australian Embassy on Saturday, May 7th.  This is one of the most popular events on the Tokyo social calendar and tickets sell out quickly every year. Information about ticket sales will be coming soon!

Our next Coffee Morning will be held on Monday April 11th at Oakwood Aoyama. Coffee Morning is a great way for people to meet up with fellow ex-pats in Tokyo, get information about Tokyo life and to make new friends. Our host is long-term Tokyo resident, Matthew de Wilde. To sign up for the next meeting, please click here:http://www.australiasocietytokyo.com/events

We look forward to seeing you at an event soon!
